THE DANGERS. Associated with Grit in a Parrot's Diet: Grit is an important aid in helping certain birds, such as finches, canaries and other passerines digest food - but this does NOT apply to parrots. Parrots have a smaller exit opening from the stomach into the intestines, so grit remains trapped in the stomach causing internal blockage. The birds may show neurological symptoms, weight loss, and eventually death. CAUTION: Never give your parrot alcohol, avocado or chocolate. asparagus, cabbage, caffeine products, milk and cream, raw potato, and rhubarb and especially crisps or junk food, these products have a high level of salt These can kill your parrot!

PET PARROTS generally present challenges, such as excessive chewing. They do discover their beaks as method of disciplining us once they are out of the baby stage they can be somewhat naughty, and it really is important to learn to understand them and to guide their behaviour. Established Undisciplined parrots will chew on electric wiring potentially causing house fires. They regard anything in your home as a "toy" that can be chewed on; destroying items that you may hold dear. Even a young bird requires proper guidance; this becomes even more challenging when it involves a rescued bird that may require rehabilitation

Usually, African Grey Parrots are medium-sized parrots native to Africa. Primarily grey with accents of white area around the eye, African Greys are also famous for their red or maroon tail. Basically, there are two subspecies of African Greys: the Congo—which are about 12 inches to 30cm long, with light grey feathers, deep red tails and black beaks—and the Timneh race—which are smaller, have a darker charcoal gray colour, a darker maroon tail, with a horn collared beak. Today, there is also known a third and fourth sub specie—the Ghana African Grey that is similar to the Congo African grey but darker and smaller and the Cameroon African Grey or the “big silvers.” Determining the sex of an African Grey parrot will sorely depend on their physical traits: males are generally bigger in size, round eyes, have a flatter and broader head while females have longer and slender neck, small rounded head and elliptical eyes.
